IF – Celebrate with Retro Cake

20 02 2009

celebration-retro-cakeThis week’s Illustration Friday topic is Celebration so here’s a taste of Retro Strawberry Cake. True, it’s influenced by 60s cooking books and a little on the gaudy side… it could definitely do with some photoshop magic, (maybe a moire pattern?) as it’s currently in all my usual media – pencil, coloured pencil, watercolours, inks and gouache, but heck, it’s past midnight here and nearly the end of this week’s challenge… enough already!

Childhood memories – Liquorice Allsorts

My mother just sent me a book from home by Gavin Bishop, one of my favourite NZ author/illustrators who I met as a student teacher when I worked in his art department at Christ’s College for a month. Piano Rock is about his 1950’s childhood and features spot illustrations throughout, including one of Liquorice Allsorts, (sweets/candy). When I was a kid, it seemed to me all ‘old people’ had ’Black Knight’ Liquorice or liquorice allsorts in plentiful supply… the memory prompted me to draw these Bassett’s allsorts yesterday.

Yearbook Yourself

9 11 2008

I’m in the middle of writing my MA proposal (due Tuesday), so what better thing to do than discover a new time-wasting activity. If your facebook needs a retro overhaul, you’ve time to kill or workmates to amuse, go to http://www.yearbookyourself.com/

Retro signage

1 09 2008

I came across this weathered retro pavement sign in Nth Hollywood. It was mid-morning and they already had customers.
